Special storage paper for kimonos, Tatōshi Paper. What is Tatōshi Paper? Tatōshi paper is a special wrapping paper used for storing kimonos. The name varies by region. From tatōshi or tatōgami, to bunko-shi or bunko-gami, and many other names. (In some areas, the same term tatōshi paper might refer to kaishi paper or isho-jiki.) The main roles of tatōshi paper are ① mold prevention, ② dust and dirt prevention, and ③ wrinkle prevention. ① Mold Prevention As the name suggests, tatōshi paper is made of paper, so it is expected to have moisture-absorbing properties. If moisture accumulates in chests of drawers or closets, it can cause mold. Therefore, it is safe to wrap kimonos in tatōshi paper that absorbs moisture. ② Dust and Dirt Prevention Even when stored in chests of drawers or closets, dust tends to accumulate over time. Wrapping kimonos in tatōshi paper prevents dust and dirt from settling directly on the fabric. ③ Wrinkle Prevention When kimonos are stacked directly or folded and placed in paper bags, they tend to develop unwanted wrinkles.
